We would be exaggerating to say that emojis will soon make typed words obsolete, but đ¤¨đ¤đź. What wouldnât be an overstatement, though, is to say that emojis are very useful (although sometimes ambiguous, like the three in the previous sentence). Emojipedia is an online resource that helps make sense of emojis,âincluding what they mean, how theyâre used, how theyâre trending, and other must-know emoji information. Emojipedia is also a voting member of the Unicode Consortium, the international group that maintains uniform standards for typed characters on keyboards and keypads from all manufacturers in all languages, in all countries. No small job. This page on the Emojipedia site is dedicated to the latest emoji statistics, and itâs updated several times a year. We viewed it in October 2020; you may be seeing an updated version.
Check it out here.
EXPLORE, REFLECT, SPEAK UP
1. âEmoji Statisticsâ gives a comprehensive view of emojis on Twitter and other social media. However, data from personal messages sent via SMS, WhatsApp, or other message platforms, canât ethically be gathered, and those messages are likely to show very different emoji use, since many people develop their own individualized meanings for private messages with their friends and loved ones. One of our friends, for example, has long used đ to refer to their job because of a silly joke told years ago; their frequent texting partners understand the symbolism, but it would be puzzling to anyone else. How do you use emojis differently in your personal messages? Have you and a close friend or sweetheart evolved your own emoji meanings? How transparent might they be to others? (If you never use any emojis yourself, ask these questions to a friend who does.)
2. A section of the page shows recent emoji trends, and each trend begins with a two-emoji sequence that, carefully interpreted, says essentially the same thing as the sentence that follows it. How transparent are those sequences? Which ones are the easiest to interpret? Why? For most of the items, the direction of the trend is the second element in the sequence, but it could have been the other way around, couldnât it? Did the Emojipedia editors make the most sensible choices about the message of each two-emoji sequence? Why or why not?
3. LETâS TALK. Some emojis are used pretty literally; for example, a đđź depicts âthumbs up,â a widely used gesture of approval. Some emojis may give emotional cluesâ𤣠or đ¤ for exampleâthat could be very helpful to a reader/recipient when interpreting the intent of the words. Others may be more of an adornment, such as đ at the end of a celebratory message. Still others may be used symbolically, such as đĄ for an idea, â° for time (or âhurry upâ), or đ for, as âEmoji Statisticsâ explains, a particular area of human anatomy or âother non-fruit uses.â Identify the emojis that you use or see most frequently, and think about whether they are generally used literally, affectively, decoratively, symbolically, or with some other purpose. Discuss your list and analysis with a few classmates. In what ways are your emoji âdictionariesâ similar? In what ways different? Did you hear anything surprising in what your classmates said? If you didnât, how surprising is that?
4. LET’S WRITE. There are more than three thousand emojis in the current standard set, and more are added every year. Three thousand! And growing! How many do you actually use in your personal texts and social media posts? (If you donât use any at all, thatâs a perfectly good answer. Keep going anyway.) Which ones do you think are unnecessary and just clutter up your screen? Do you wish there were more emojis? Fewer? What reasons do you have for your responses? Has the Emoji Statistics page influenced your opinions in any way? How? Write an essay that responds to these questions. You may want to consider as your intended audience the Unicode Emoji Subcommittee; theyâre the actual people who make the decisions about the standard emoji sets.

@victorpaniagua Hi Victor, I really liked your definition for this đđť emoji. I use it the same way, when Iâm annoyed at someone. Most people may usually use it in the context of something positive, but itâs cool that someone uses it the same way I do. You definition for this đ¤ emoji is a little different than mine. Usually when Iâm annoyed or frustrated Iâll use this đ emoji. For your weekend sentence Iâm going to guess you will be going for a run, bowling, having a party, and getting some rest.
